Diagnostic Imaging of Child Abuse, 3rd Edition
Date Posted: Tuesday, December 01, 2015On October 21st of this year, Paul K. Kleinman, MD presented his talk “Skeletal Injuries Associated with Abusive Head Trauma” as our Radiology Grand Rounds speaker here at University Campus. Dr. Kleinman who previously worked at UMass as Director of Pediatric Imaging is now the Division Chief and Professor of Musculoskeletal Imaging at Boston Children’s Hospital. Dr. Kleinman is an internationally renowned expert on this subject matter.
Just days before giving this Grand Rounds presentation, Dr. Kleinman published the 3rd edition of Diagnostic Imaging of Child Abuse (Cambridge University Press), the only comprehensive book on this topic. The first sentence of the book’s description on the Cambridge University Press website states, “this updated edition of the leading text on the imaging of child abuse and its imitators combines radiographic images with pathologic correlates of inflicted injuries.” Andrew Karellas, PhD, Professor, and Srinivasan Vedantham, PhD, Associate Professor, both medical physicists at UMass, collaborated on writing a chapter for the book titled “Radiologic image formation: physical principles, technology, and radiation dose considerations”. This chapter focuses on “… certain fundamental aspects of radiologic imaging and technologies that are important for understanding the role of each imaging modality on the evaluation of suspected child abuse…”. The authors gratefully acknowledge the assistance from Deborah J. Pellegrino R.T. (R)(M) and Jessica Benjamin M.Ed., R.T. (R)(CT) for assistance with acquiring the radiographic images.
