Anesthesiology Elective Course Description

INTRODUCTION:  The Surgical Critical Care at Memorial SICU for 4th Year Medical Student rotation is a one month elective in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) at the Memorial Campus, offered to the fourth year medical students. The primary goal of the rotation is to provide the medical student an exposure to the surgical intensive care unit and an environment to acquire basic knowledge and skills related to the care of the critically-ill patient under the direction of intensivists from the Departments of Anesthesiology and Surgery. The medical student will be expected to demonstrate basic competence in the following general competencies.

COMPETENCIES
I. PATIENT CARE/COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
1. Cognitive Skills:
     a. Improve the skills to work up and deliver care to critically ill patients.
     b. Communicate effectively with and demonstrate empathy and respectful behavior when interacting with patients and their families.
     c. Ensure relevant and accurate information about their patients.
2. Technical Skills:
    a. Insert peripheral IV access
    b. Observe the insertion of intra-arterial (radial, femoral, axillary) and central venous catheters (internal jugular, subclavian, femoral).

II. MEDICAL KNOWLEDGE
Demonstrate basic knowledge in the following topics:
    1. Mechanical Ventilation
    2. Management of acute lung injury and the acute respiratory distress syndrome
    3. Weaning from mechanical ventilation
    4. Hemodynamic monitoring
    5. Use of inotropes and vasopressors
    6. Massive bleeding and transfusion
    7. Shock

III. PRACTICE-BASED LEARNING
The medical students will be able to:
    1. Locate evidence from scientific studies that are relevant to their patients' health problems.
    2. Use information technology. 

IV. COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS
The medical students must be able to demonstrate basic interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective exchange of information. The students are expected to:
    1. Create and sustain an ethically sound relationship with their patients;
    2. Use effective communication techniques to provide and elicit information
    3. Efficient and effective presentations during daily rounds

V. PROFESSSIONALISM
Medical students must demonstrate a commitment to completing their professional responsibilities, adhering to ethical principles and being sensitive to a diverse patient population 

VI. SYSTEMS-BASED PRACTICE
Students must demonstrate an awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context and system of health care.

VII. EDUCATIONAL GOALS
Didactic activities: Formal lectures will take place on Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8 AM
Multidisciplinary critical conferences, held at 4 PM on Wednesdays
