AM Barrett, MD

AM Barrett, MD, chair and professor of neurology, was awarded the appointment as UMass Memorial Chair in Neurology. Dr. Barrett joined UMass Chan Medical School and the VA Central Western Massachusetts Healthcare System in 2022. As a physician-scientist studying brain-behavior relationships, her research is based on both cognitive neurology, rehabilitation, and neuropsychology in studying spatial cognition, hidden disabilities, and deficit unawareness.

Dr. Barrett shared, “This is an amazing honor to be appointed by the University of Massachusetts Foundation as a UMass Memorial Health endowed chair. The Neurology Department will work on realizing our mission: groundbreaking research, transformative education, and compassionate clinical care to resolve neurological disease.  I am grateful to stand among an outstanding group of scientists and leaders who make up our UMass community, and for the recognition dual appointments create, unifying our research, education and healthcare efforts.”

Dr. Bosco received a chancellor medal and was named the Paul J. DiMare Chair in Neurodegenerative Disease on September 12, 2024, during the 2024 Convocation ceremony and address by Chancellor Michael F. Collins

Daryl Bosco, PhD, professor of neurology, biochemistry, and molecular biotechnology with the Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and associate vice chair of research for the Department of Neurology, joined the UMass Chan family in 2008 and is an innovative researcher in neurodegenerative disease research focusing on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia, and traumatic brain injury.   

Dr. Bosco shares, “It is a tremendous honor to be named the Paul J. DiMare Chair in Neurodegenerative Disease. I am incredibly grateful to the DiMare family and the leadership at UMass Chan for this Endowed Chair. With the Paul J. DiMare endowment, my lab will carry forward Mr. DiMare and his family’s vision of “curing the incurable” by starting new investigations into the causes of sporadic ALS.”

Congratulations Dr. Ferris for your new role as associate director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program.

"It is my pleasure to announce Dr. Ferris new role as the new associate director of the UMass Chan Medical School and affiliated UMass Memorial Medical Center ACGME accredited Vascular Neurology Program," shares Majaz Moonis, MD, director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program.

Ferris shares, "I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to recruit and mentor stroke fellows in our program. Being an alumna of our vascular neurology fellowship myself, I know what great training and exposure they will get here, and am proud to carry on that tradition."

Kara Smith, MD, associate professor of neurology, delivered a lecture for the Benedict CME Conference Series focused on the collaborative roles of neurologists and primary care physicians in the care of patients with Parkinson’s disease. The Department of Medicine sponsored conference was held on June 19, 2024.

The Healthcare Delivery Institute’s Physician Leadership Development Program (PLDP), a collaboration program between UMass Memorial Medical Center and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), has nominated Lan Qin, MD, professor of neurology, and director of the neurology Clinical Strategic Initiatives (CSI), Neurodiagnostics Center, and the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship program, to participate in the upcoming 2024 leadership course.  

Dr. Qin has accepted the invitation to design and strengthen her leadership and management skills alongside other physician leaders working in healthcare. Dr. Qin joined the UMass community as a neurology resident before attending the fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology. She transitioned into a role as a faculty physician in 2004. Over the past twenty years, Dr. Qin has supported the department in various roles including as one of our former neurology clerkship directors.  

We are excited Dr. Qin will participate in this nine-month course beginning this fall, and we look forward to her continued role of mentoring our future medical leaders through clinical practice and expertise in the department’s fellowship program.
