If you’re still using a cotton swab to clean your ears, Aaron Remenschneider, MD, MPH, assistant professor of otolaryngology, wants you to reconsider.
“One of the more common procedures that I do, apart from cochlear implants, is to reconstruct patients’ eardrums after infections or trauma, like a Q-tip injury,” said Dr. Remenschneider during a podcast interview for Voices of UMassMed.
Remenschneider runs an active research program at UMass Medical School that is focused on improving outcomes for patients who receive cochlear implants and other treatments, and he heads up the Hearing Implant Program at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
“Being able to give patients their hearing back again, or for the first time in the case of a young child who has never heard, that’s a real blessing to be able to do that,” said Remenschneider.
This year, the Hearing Implant Program will be the beneficiary of the Fund-a-Need at the tenth annual Winter Ball. The event is the premiere annual gala to support clinical care, research and education at UMass Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center.
“There are many individuals who may be candidates for cochlear implants but don’t know it, and so we really want to get the word out so that we can reach all individuals that may benefit from this technology and from the resources at UMass,” he said.
