Rotations
Clinical training months are divided into monthly rotations. There are three different clinical rotations which have been outlined below. The number of months on the various rotations for each fellow will be determined by the program director. The remaining months not assigned to clinical rotations will consist of continuing outpatient clinical responsibilities (continuity clinic), electives in subspecialty clinics, clinical pathology, radiation oncology, blood banking and/or continuing research projects.
Clinical Rotation 1: Inpatient Consult Service, UMass Memorial Medical Center University Campus
Inpatient
- Provide timely assessment of Hematology-Oncology service patients, coordinating with the hospitalist and residents/students primarily managing the general medical aspects of these patients
- Assist with the management of the inpatient Hematology-Oncology ward service and have a working knowledge of all oncologically complex inpatients
- Arrange for outpatient follow-up if necessary
- Perform (or supervise) all necessary procedures
- Follow-up of pending laboratory tests and communicate with the patient's primary care physician once patient is discharged
Other responsibilities
- Communicate admissions, discharges and updates with the patient’s outpatient attending
Clinical Rotation 2: Consultation Service, UMass Memorial Medical Center University and Memorial Campuses
Inpatient
- Provide timely assessment of Hematology-Oncology consults patients who are under care of teams other than oncology team
- Follow-up of inpatients on consults service until issues resolved
- Arrange for outpatient follow-up if necessary
- Perform (or supervise) all necessary procedures
- Follow-up of pending laboratory tests and communicate with the patient's primary care physician once patient is discharged
Other responsibilities
- Decide (along with attending) which cases from the consult service to present at the Fellows Case Conference (Friday a.m.)
Clinical Rotation 3: Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) and Leukemia service, University Campus
Inpatient
- Provide timely assessment of BMT patients, coordinating with the other team members such as residents and APPs
- Assist with the management of the inpatient Hematology-Oncology BMT service and have a working knowledge of all inpatients, especially complicated cases
- Arrange for outpatient follow-up if necessary
- Perform (or supervise) all necessary procedures
- Follow-up of pending laboratory tests and communicate with the patient's primary care physician once patient is discharged
Clinical Rotation 3: Selective rotations
A variety of other clinical experiences will be encountered during these rotations including:
- Hematopathology
- Transfusion Medicine
- Radiation Oncology
- Gynecologic Oncology
- Palliative Care
Other clinical responsibilities for all rotations
- Respond to prescription refills, patient phone calls and clinically relevant communications from colleagues regarding your own continuity clinic patients
