RN First Assist is made up of a two-course requirement:
- Fall – N610H
- Spring – N611H (N610H is a prerequisite for N611H)
The program consists of two 3-credit graduate courses.
N610H is theory based and is offered as a blended course. There are 3 live all day classes that take place on Saturdays. The live classes will emphasize a hands-on component of the weekly online modules. Simulation exercises in our new Carlin OR simulation suite at the UMass Chan Medical school address sterile technique, identification of minor/major surgical instrumentation as well as elements of chole-laparoscopy. The last live class provides a suturing workshop.
N611H is designed to offer weekly online modules to reinforce and build on the direct clinical application of core concepts. The AORN document for RNFA core competencies is introduced as learners begin applying their didactic knowledge in the clinical setting. Discussion also occurs regarding certification options for the RNFA. Completion of 270 hours with an identified preceptor(s) is required. The Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing RNFA faculty will communicate with the learner and their identified preceptor regarding the best experiences for demonstrating core competencies. * In addition, the Typhon software is utilized to document procedures and progress toward competency success.
Applicants are asked to complete the online registration process. Course faculty and staff will review all registrations and will offer admission to the program based on program requirements/submitted documentation.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR ENROLLMENT: This course is offered to RNs with proof of CNOR certification or must obtain CNOR certification prior to the start of Spring N611H course. This course is also available to APRN Nurse Practitioners and to DNP (APRN program of study) students in their clinical year.
ADMISSION CRITERIA: Applicants are required to complete the registration process and checklist items listed below:

- Applicants are required to identify their primary preceptor and institutional setting for their practicum experience. The school is not responsible for clinical placements or on-site clinical activities. Program participants and preceptors are working under their own professional licenses, possess practice liability coverage and adhere to any relevant institutional policies.

- Upload a copy of a government issued ID.

- Upload your letter of intent. Letter of intent should summarize your reasons for applying to this course. Include your relevant current or previous experience and career goals. This letter of intent should be a Maximum of 400 words.
Course faculty and staff will review all registrations and will offer admission to the course based on course requirements and submitted documentation.
- After registering and receiving an offer of admission to the course you will receive a payment notification email, payment must be made within 72 hours (about 3 days). Students are required to purchase the core curriculum for the RNFA (AORN). Link to purchase curriculum
