New sustainability and energy manager

Kortni Wroten has joined UMass Chan Medical School’s Facilities Management Department as the new campus sustainability and energy manager.

“I’m very excited to be part of this amazing and important institution,” Wroten said. “I look forward to getting to know the campus community and helping to implement the goals of the school’s five-year sustainability and climate action plan.”

Before joining UMass Chan, Wroten worked as the sustainability coordinator for the town of Weston. Her previous experiences include serving as a sustainability ambassador at the National Grid Sustainability Hub in Worcester and completing a capstone project on sustainable procurement processes in the city of Cambridge’s Community Development Department.

“We are fortunate to have Kortni joining our team,” said Suzanne Wood, associate director of facilities management for sustainability and campus services. “She’s passionate about sustainability and has a focused range of educational and work experiences that are a great fit for our programs.”

Wroten earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and Spanish at Worcester State University; a Master of Science in environmental science and policy; and a Master of Business Administration, with a focus on sustainability and social change, both from Clark University.

While working as a graduate research assistant at Clark in 2019, Wroten was chosen to be a delegate to COP25, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, held that year in Madrid.

“We are confronting a global climate crisis, and I believe it’s up to all of us to act directly and significantly to reduce our collective impact on the environment and protect the future of our community and our planet,” Wroten said.

Working closely with Wood, Wroten will take the lead on many of the sustainability programs on campus. Any one who is interested in getting involved in the various “Growing Green” initiatives should contact her at Kortni.Wroten@umassmed.edu.
