Elective Description: Exposure and participation in the practice of community-based child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) within the context of multiple practice settings of faculty in the UMass Memorial Department of Psychiatry, Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. Training in roles for the CAP as a consultant to the system of care/others involved with the care of the youth in addition to assessment of individual youth and family will be emphasized. Methods of Teaching: Dr. Metz will meet with the student to determine the student’s particular interests and match these with available options for types of practice and practice setting. Students will be actively involved in meeting with patients and their families and documenting these encounters in various settings. Students will have a mix of observation of care delivery by faculty, child psychiatry fellows and other providers, as well as opportunities to provide direct care to children and their families. Most of the contact in this elective is directly with faculty. Types of practice and practice settings available include: Consultation to Wraparound teams through Child Behavior Health Initiative Intensive Care Coordination (Peter Metz, MD and CHL Care Coordinators and Family Partners involved in this service) Consultation to Child and Adolescent DMH clients and participation in Worcester Child serving Interagency Team meetings (Kamlyn Haynes, MD.) Consultation to pediatricians through the Massachusetts Child Psychiatry Access Project (MCPAP) (Mary Jeffers-Terry, RNCS, and staff involved in this service) Participation in the CANDO Clinic providing care to youth on the Autism Spectrum (David Cochran, MD and CANDO Clinic PT/OT Speach and Language staff. Traditional private practice outpatient CAP care (Mitchel Wangh, MD) Child Psychiatry Psychopharmacology Clinic (Anne Lutz, MD and Child Psychiatry Fellows) Child and Adolescent Neurodevelopmental Consultation Clinic (David Levoy, MD, Child Psychiatry Fellows and multidisciplinary staff for this clinic) Child Behavior Clinic (Preschool children and their families) (Peter Metz, MD, Tesi Kohlenberg, MD, and Child Psychiatry Fellow) Long term residential care to youth in DCF custody at Nazareth Home (Frank Gatti, MD) Youth Mobile Crisis Intervention (CHL staff from this service) Residential Substance Abuse Treatment for adolescent girls at Grace House (Anne Lutz, MD, Grace House staff and some months, Child Psychiatry Fellow) Teaching will also be accomplished through attendance at regularly scheduled didactic teaching sessions including: Child Psychiatry Fellow Didactic Seminar Play Psychotherapy Seminar (when in session) Child Behavior Clinic Didactics Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds Child Psychiatry didactic seminars as part of the Child Psychiatry Psychopharmacology Clinic Students will identify an area of in depth reading they will do during the elective, with support from Dr. Metz regarding the choice of area and readings. Number of patients seen: 15 to 45 per month Supervision: Students on this elective will meet for individual supervision with Dr. Metz 1 hour per week. Supervision will also occur with the faculty member and child psychiatry fellow and staff during meetings at identified sites regarding review of patients and their families seen by the student as well as the patients and their families seen by the attending or child fellow with the student present.
