Principles 3 (P3) Course Description
P3 occupies the first week of year 2 in Vista, and occurs prior to the start of the cardiovascular block. Approximately half of the week is dedicated to a newly developed anti-racism curriculum. this curriculum will require summer-reading for students to prepare. The calendar week will include independent learning modules, small group sessions, a few lectures, and a patient panel. The remaining half of the week will be dedicated to consolidation and integration of knowledge acquired during the first year Vista blocks. These will be organized into high-yield review sessions for each 1st year blocks and will wrap the week up with an NBME exam covering related content. Finally, one of the afternoons will be utilized by students in showcasing their SDOH (social determinants of health) work through a poster session.
By the end of the course, the students should be able to achieve the following:
- Building on previous knowledge from ECL small group "racism in medicine" and the Dorothy Roberts summer campus read, the learner will explain the major tenets and practices of the history of racism in medicine
- Deconstruct, through the lens of equity and diversity, medical research literature to identify the potential impact of privilege and bias
- Analyze the impact of racism on the patient's experience of healthcare and contrast with the average experience of non-racialized patients
- Demonstrate skills for interrupting racism in the healthcare and medical learning environments
- Analyze integration between multiple systems in the etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment of disease processes
