How will the LCME accreditation process roll out at UMass Chan?
The accreditation process consists of four distinct steps:
1. Assembly of the facts (the DCI) regarding institutional setting , curriculum management and planning, medical students and learning environment.
2. Institutional self-study
• Faculty, Administration and students will review, analyze and critique the DCI by forming a self-study task force (TF) and with various subcommittees
• the T.H. Chan School of Medicine students will form an independent student analysis committee (ISAC) to create a tool, survey their peers, analyze the data and submit a report
3. Compilation of an executive summary based on the collected data from the ISAC and subcommittee reports from the task force
4. A site visit by the LCME, scheduled for April 26-29, 2020
Who serves on the Self-study Task Force and what will their job entail?
The Self-study Task Force will include individuals spanning the spectrum of our diverse educational community, representing faculty, students, staff, administration, community affiliates, trustees, residents and alumni.
In overseeing our self-study, the Task Force and its subcommittees will comprehensively review, analyze and assess our medical education program, with the goal of defining our institutional strengths as well as opportunities for improvement and further development.
The self-study Task Force will execute its work through a series of subcommittees and working groups designed to focus on specific components of the database and LCME standards. Each subcommittee will submit its self-study report to the Task Force for compilation into the final self-study executive summary.
What does the Independent Student Analysis Committee do?
The Independent Student Analysis provides medical students with the opportunity to independently conduct their own data gathering and analysis of the the T.H. Chan School of Medicine’s medical education program, student services, environment for learning and the adequacy of educational resources. Through the ISAC process, students will convene a committee that will develop a comprehensive survey administered across all four years (MS1-4 and MD/PhD studies), with an analysis of the survey data and a final summary report. The ISA report will be included in the database that is reviewed as part of our institutional self-study and will also be submitted as part of our accreditation materials for review by the LCME.
Who is guiding the LCME accreditation process at UMass Chan?
Dean Flotte is charged with the leadership of the LCME accreditation and has convened the Accreditation Oversight Committee (AOC) to provide guidance and assistance with the operational and resource needs for our accreditation process. Serving on the AOC are representatives from our school offices, regional campus and project management team.
