Dr. John Broach, Disaster Medicine Division Director
Dr. Broach attended undergraduate and medical school, as well as receiving his MPH from Northwestern University in Chicago before his emergency medicine residency training at the University of Massachusetts. Dr. Broach completed the UMaSs DM fellowship. He serves on several hospital-wide disaster preparedness committees, as well as being a member of the Massachusetts DMAT-MA2. Dr. Broach has been instrumental in preparing UMass for emerging infectious diseases such as H1N1 and Ebola.
Dr. Andrew Milsten, Disaster Medicine Fellowship Director
Dr. Milsten received his MD from George Washington University and completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the Lincoln Medical Center in New York City. He completed an EMS Fellowship in addition to a MAsters of Science in Emergency Health Services at the University of Maryland. He has been active as a clinician and researcher since 2000 at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and at Baltimore Washington Medical Center. His research has primarily focused on mass gathering medicine while he was the director for special events & Ravens stadium fan operations. He joined the UMass Emergency Medicine Program and faculty in 2009 and is the fellowship director of Disaster Medicine and Emergency MAnagement. Dr. Milsten coordinates and runs the NDLSF training programs at UMass, specifically BDLS and ADLS. He was also instrumental in organizing and founding the New England Society of Disaster Medicine (NESDM).

Clare Charbonnet, MD
Dr. Charbonnet studied civil engineering at the University of Notre Dame. After two years of information technology consulting, she volunteered with an international disaster response organization. She served as demolition team leader on earthquake remediation projects in both Indonesia and Haiti. While in Haiti, Clare discovered a passion for medicine.
While in medical school at Northwestern University, Clare conducted research on the biopsychosocial factors that affect HIV transmission among the LGBTQ community. She joined the emergency medicine residency at MetroHealth Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. In residency, Clare established an EMS subspecialty track and developed the training curriculum for online medical command. She is excited to start her two-year Disaster Medicine fellowship in July 2023.

Dr. Hernon is frequently involved in the training of resident physicians, emergency nurses, paramedics/EMTs and medical students. She has had over fifteen years experience working in Emergency Medical Services, has worked as a flight physician for UMassMemorial LifeFlight, and has publications in topics of toxicology and radiation exposure.

Michael J. Hunter EMT-P
Deputy Chief of EMS for Worcester EMS at UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC)
Mr. Hunter has served on the Massachusetts Committee of Trauma’s Trauma Registry Sub-Committee and is an active member of the UMMHC Emergency Medicine/Trauma Committee. Member of NAEMT and has been active in PHTLS since the late 1980s. In addition to his involvement on the PHTLS Executive Council, he is the Massachusetts PHTLS State Coordinator and an active member of the PHTLS International Faculty

Deputy Chief Kelleher has been a member of Foxborough Fire & Rescue for 20 years and is currently assigned as Deputy Chief of Operations which oversees major event planning and logistics for Gillette Stadium. Deputy Chief Kelleher serves on The Massachusetts State Hazardous Materials Team as The Team Coordinator for Hazmat District 1 which covers 91 Cities and Towns in Southeastern Massachusetts including the Cape and Islands. Outside of the Fire Service Deputy Kelleher has served in the role of Hospital Safety Officer and Emergency Management Coordinator in various hospitals in and around Metro-Boston.
Ira Nemeth, M.D., FACEP, FAEMS
Associate medical director of UMass EMS and Lifeflight at Umass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester Massachusetts. Dr. Nemeth has had a varied career that has included being the Medical Director of Preparedness for Dallas County Public Health in Dallas, Texas and establishing the EMS fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston Texas. Dr. Nemeth is currently the chair of the Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee for the American College of Emergency Physicians, a member of Institute of Medicine Preparedness Forum, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Council for the American Red Cross. He also is on the Board of Directors for the National Disaster Life Support Foundation and is co-editor of the upcoming revision of the National Disaster Life Support textbook. Dr. Nemeth earned his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Tulane University and his MD from George Washington University School of Medicine. He did his residency in emergency medicine at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York and his fellowship in governmental emergency medical security services with Dr. Paul Pepe at Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
