Gestational Diabetes: Conversations Between the Placenta and Adipose Tissue
Tiffany A. Moore Simas, MD, MPH, MEd, FACOG
Chair, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, UMass Chan Medical School
Silvia Corvera, MD
Chair in Diabetes Research, Director, MSTP (MD-PhD) Program, UMass Chan Medical School
The talk was co-presented at UMass Endocrinology Grand Rounds via Zoom on May 25, 2021. Introduction by Dr. David Harlan.
Learning Objectives:
- The prevalence and current care standards for gestational diabetes screening, diagnosis and treatment
- Anatomic and physiologic adaptions of pregnancy that lead to increased adipose tissue and insulin resistance
- Human data and mouse models that informed a novel role for PAPP-A in gestational diabetes

Learn about Drs. Moore Simas and Corvera’s study
"PAPPA-mediated adipose tissue remodeling mitigates insulin resistance and protects against gestational diabetes in mice and humans"
Their study published in Science Translational Medicine outlines a new role for pregnancy-associated plasma protein A, known as PAPPA, in gestational diabetes, with translational potential as both a diagnostic tool and therapeutic target.
