“Clinical trials related to type 1 diabetes and its treatment”
Dr. Ziegler's primary research goal is understanding the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes and finding a preventive treatment for a world without type 1 diabetes. Her primary research focuses on identification of genetic factors, genetic risk scores and environmental determinants of the disease.
Specializing in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Dr. Ziegler began working with patients with type 1 diabetes during her residency. During a fellowship at the Joslin Diabetes Center, she started the first prospective study from birth in genetically susceptible children (the BABYDIAB study). It was the pioneer study of the natural history of type 1 diabetes in children, and led to the multinational birth cohort initiative TEDDY (The Environmental Determinant of Diabetes in the Young).
She also led the first population based public health screening ‘Fr1da’ for early stages of type 1 diabetes to prevent D.K.A. and improve clinical care. Currently Dr. Ziegler is Director of the Institute of Diabetes Research, Helmholtz Zentrum München, German Research Center for Environmental Health. She's a member of the TEDDY, TRIALNET, and GPPAD Steering Committees, respectively.
